The Annual migration of the Southern Right Whales rounding South Africa is a natural spectacle that ranks highly with more famous animal spectacles in Africa.

Every September animal lovers are drawn to Walker Bay in the town of Hermanus to see these magnificent species as they swim and play close enough to land to be easily visible from the surrounding cliff tops – which then double as excellent viewing spots for the thousands of eager visitors.

Quite apart from the magical spectacle, a festival atmosphere has grown up surrounding the event - with a more diverse range of activities taking place on the beaches and in the bars nearby. Surfing competitions plus the Arts Ramble - an opportunity to see local artists at work – are popular.

Why do these mammals embark on these seasonal movements? The answer is Climate changes, water temperature, depth, salinity, topography of the sea floor and the biggest abundance of food all play a major role in these events.
