It's that time of year again as we get ready to watch our favourite tennis stars battle it out on the courts at Wimbledon.
Here are some interesting facts about the tournament:
- The first Wimbledon was held in 1877 as an amateur competition. Men's Singles was the only event to take place. There were 22 competitors and the championship was won by Spencer Gore. A few hundred spectators were in attendance.
- Women's Singles and Men's Doubles events began seven years later, in 1884.
- There are currently 20 grass courts available for play in the Wimbledon grounds. There are also five red shale courts, four clay courts, and five indoor courts for club members.
- There will be an estimated 200 ball boys and girls running around the courts at this year's event.
